Apache Helicopter Grounding: The U.S. Army has temporarily stopped the flights of its AH-64E Apache Attack Helicopters. This decision was taken after the possible technical malfunctions come out in the Helicopter’s Improved Drive System (IDS) transmission. While the U.S. Army has not publicized the correct number of helicopters and the date of flights resumed. But about 400 helicopters have been grounded in media reports.
This case is therefore important because Apache is involved in the major attack helicopters of the US Army. It is used for attacks on enemy tanks, armored vehicles and other military bases. At the same time, Indian Army and Air Force also have AH-64E Apache Helicopter.
Apache Helicopter Grounding: I malfunction in transmission
AH-64E with IDS transmission, as per U.S. Army Apache The flights have been temporarily stopped with immediate effect. During this, helicopters will be examined and necessary corrections will be made. The military also said that this step is taken after flight safety instructions issued earlier, inspection results, maintenance-linked reports and engineering analysis.
Transmission is an important part of the helicopter. It helps to deliver the power generated from the engine to the rotor. The main rotor lifts the helicopter into the air, while the tail rotor plays an important role in maintaining its direction and balance during flight.
According to a report published in May 2026, an internal security document of the U.S. Army was suspected of internal malfunction in parts of the IDS Main Transmission. The drive of the accessory gearbox can be closed on the go of this malfunction. This led to the possibility of bearing on the thrust, electrical power and hydraulic system of the tail rotor.
While, if the power of the tail rotor goes, it may be difficult to maintain control over the direction for the helicopter. While the hydraulic and electrical systems are affected can also affect the functioning of the flight control and other essential systems. Grounding Apache Helicopter

Near Texas Fort Hood on August 12 AH-64 Apache helicopter was crashed. Both soldiers were killed in this accident. After this, the army had stopped training flights of Apache Helicopters for about a week.
However, the initial investigation did not have a problem of existing ids transmission in the accident. But the reports said that the crashed helicopter was the old variant.
Other events related to Apache have also appeared this year. An AH-64E accident occurred during training at Fort Raker of Alabama in March, in which two members of the crew were wounded. An apache was taken precautions due to maintenance problems in Alabama in April. An Apache in about 40 miles south from South Korea’s Seoul in May landed precautionary landing in the paddy field. Both of these events were not injured. The questions regarding technical examination and maintenance of Apache have arisen due to these events. Grounding Apache Helicopter
What is the Impeller Drive System of AH-64E Apache?
(Apache Helicopter Grounding)
