Indian Space Strategy: Indian forces are now increasingly working towards strengthening their space-based capabilities to face future wars and challenges. Under this objective, Indian Army, Navy and Air Force are planning to expand its resources and infrastructure in space.

Indian Space Strategy: Preparing for Future Wars, Keeping an Eye on Enemies
CDS Anil Chauhan

At the beginning of this month, an important meeting was held in the Ministry of Defence, in which the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) gave a detailed presentation. The meeting also consisted of Chief Officer of the Three Forces, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Indian Space Strategy: Expanding Space Based Resources

In this presentation, the Indian Army is now focusing on strengthening its space-based resources and ground infrastructure. Under this, it is planned to increase the number of satellites and dissipate the ground infrastructure required for their operations. Under this, it is planned to handle new responsibilities on DMA and Defence Space Agency (DSA).

Recently, the central cabinet has approved a large space surveillance project, under which 52 satellites will be launched. These satellites will be used for surveillance, communication, and other strategic purposes. The project will have participation of both Government and Private Sector.

The defense space agency will expand

Indian Space Strategy:

China in Doklam: The history of border disputes between China and India is long and complex. Recently, China has settled new settlements in the border of Bhutan and retaliate the regional dispute once again. It is important that this dispute has come to the moment when Beijing has a special reproductive level talk today. In this talk, India’s National Security Advisor is met between Agile Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The main objective of this meeting is to resolve the ongoing stressful situation on the India-China border with the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The negotiation was agreed during the Kazan meeting of Prime Minister Modi and China President Xi Jinping. The talks are getting the first time after the nap in the Galvan Valley in 2020, and the first will be such a meeting in the last five years.

China in Doklam: This year was revealed in October

However, it is not new to the village settlers that have been revealed recently. Earlier in October 2024, a report on the side of the Network Turquoise Roof (Turquoise Roof) of Tibetan Analysts was released in October 2024, which was reported that China has settled 22 villages in the border of Bhutan. 19 of these 22 villages in China are fully residential villages, while there are three low-business areas. They will later be replaced in small towns. While the construction work began in seven of these 22 villages was revealed at the beginning of 2023.

Exercise Himshakti: The Indian Army in the Hazardous Cold showed strength on the China border, from the thunder of the cannons in a temperature of -35 degrees

752 residential blocks have been created in these villages, with a plan to settle 2284 families. In addition, 7000 people including officers, construction personnel, border police and military personnel are being settled in these villages. China has captured about 825 sq km Ilaka of Bhutan to create these villages. At the same time, these villages have been built in areas with quite a sloping terrain and a high valley, with a height from the sea to 3832 m. The most elevated village of China settled is located at a height of about 4670 meters from Menchuma Marine.

China in Doklam: Importance of Doklam

According to satellite data, eight of these villages have been built around Doklam Pathhar since 2020. The strategic position of these settlements is a concern for India, as these are located near the "Siliguri Corridor" of India. According to the Turcoise Roof report, China is putting pressure on the Bhutan to keep the Northeast areas near it and hand over the Doclam Plateau China. In the 1990s China had proposed Bhutan, but Bhutan had rejected it. While China’s activities could have a direct impact on India. India has to adopt a solid strategy to monitor and protect Bhutan from China’s influence on Siliguri Corridor. China has further accelerated its manufacturing activities since the Doklam Mozard between India and China in 2017.

NSA China Visit: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval Goes to China, Aham Negotiations to Solve Border Disputes on LAC

"This action of China is a violation of the peace agreement between Bhutan and China in 1998," former Indian Ambassador Ashok Kathy commented on it. This Agreement deals with maintaining status as far as the dispute is resolved. ""

Doklam is the area where a 73-day military kinned between India and China in 2017. India had stopped China from road construction at that time, as the region is strategically sensitive to India.

"China has tried to remove Bhutan from India by making strategic pressures in Doklam and surrounding areas," said Researcher Robert Barnet. Bhutan, which understands India’s security concerns, is now talking about taking this dispute towards a trilateral solution. ""

Examination of India-Brown Relations

The military presence of India in Bhutan is from the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT), 1963. But recent developments have made these relationships a new challenge. "Why Bhutan will expect India to help if India fails to remove China troops on its ground," said Defence Specialist Pravin Sahini. "He said China has captured over 800 square kilometres of Bhutan. Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) is responsible for protecting the regional integrity of Bhutan, but if India has failed to remove the PLA from its own land, why Bhutan will expect India to help? Bhutan will soon resolve its border dispute with China, and we will see IMTRAT come back from Bhutan. It is posted there since 1963, but now it can become history. ""

Things and Indian Responses to Border

From April 2020 between India and China, military detention is underway. Recently, on October 21, both countries agreed to the military removal from disputed areas such as Demochok and Deppong. Two days later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during the BRICS conference in Russia and discussed the border dispute.

SIPRI Report: Global Arms Sales Reach Rs 52 Lakh Crore in 2023, Rise by 4.2%

SIPRI: Global conflict and arms demand

The Russia-Ukraine War has heavily increased arms production in Europe and North America. Companies in these areas are increasing their production capacity to meet the defence needs.

SIPRI Arms Export: India’s three-largest weapons producer companies managed to get a huge deal of garland flags, self-sufficient India

Similarly, stress is increasing even in the Indo-Pacific region. Asian countries have accelerated their defence modernization due to power balance and marine disputes. At the same time, the military spending is constantly increasing due to the instability in the Middle East.

Large change in data between 2022 and 2023

The SIPRI report reported that in 2023, 73 companies recorded an increase in their income, while 26 companies reported a decline. On the contrary, 47 companies had increased income in 2022 and 53 companies had declined income.

This change shows that the global defense industry has leveraged the need for security concerns, growing defence budgets and arms supply.

Indian Defence Sector: An Emerging Global Strength

Indian defence companies have strengthened their position in global top 100. It reflects a growing strategic priority towards India’s self-reliance and defence exports.

Companies like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India Electronics Limited (BEL), and Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Government Self-sufficient India Increased its defence production capabilities under the campaign.

Record increase in defense export

India’s Defence Export in 2023-24 ₹Reached the record level of 21,083 crore. Last Financial Year ₹15920 crore to 32.5% higher. The global demand for cooperation, indigenous innovation, and Indian-made products such as fighter planes, drones and defence electronics have made this growth possible.

Indigenous Defense Products' Grower

Indian built-in fast fighter jets, drones, and other defense systems are now making their identity in the international market. These products are not only strengthening the resolution of self-sufficient India, but also making India an important player in the global arms market.

While the production and sales of arms on the one hand are economically beneficial, it also highlights the concern of growing militaryization and conflicts. Growing military spending are strengthening the security of countries, but it is also causing the risk of further enhancing geopolitical stress.

Complex security conditions for the world

The growth of 4.2% in global arms sales shows that the world is facing a complex security environment. This time for India is an important opportunity to strengthen its position in the defence sector and identify the global market.

LCA Tejas: In order to increase the strength of Indian Air Force (IAF) and meet the lack of squadron, the Standing Committee on Protecting Parliament has directed the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to accelerate the production of Tejas fighter jets to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). It was said in the report presented in the Parliament under the chairman of the committee and headed by BJP MP Radha Mohan Singh.

LCA Tejas: Anxiety on Air Force Reduction Strength

The report stated that Indian Air Force needs 42 fighter squadrons to prepare for possible two-front wars with Pakistan and China. However, the air force currently has only 31 active squadrons, with 16-18 fighter planes each.

The Committee also expressed concern about the delayed delivery of fast planes. HAL was ordered 83 Tejas Mark-1A planes with a total cost of Rs 48,000 crore. Since March 2024, the delivery of these had to be started, but not yet one aircraft has been assigned to the air force.

Instructions for increasing the production capacity of LCA Tejas to HAL

HAL has been instructed to increase its production efficiency. The Ministry of Defence, which is the head of HAL, has convinced the committee that the steps are being taken in this case.

The Ministry of Defence also reported that the Air Force has started the process of purchasing 97 additional Tejas Mark-1A aircraft. The Defence Acquisition Council has given initial approval to the purchase of these aircraft and has been sought for formal proposals.

Increased challenges from retirement of old aircraft

Another challenge for Indian Air Force is to be the retire of old aircraft. Two Mig-21 squadrons of the Soviet-era will be retired in a phased manner for the next year. In addition, about 250 aircraft of Jaguar, Mig-29 and Mirage 2000 involved in the 1980s will be retired after 2029-30.

After the retirement of these aircraft, the operational capacity of the air force can be affected. Therefore, the immediate delivery of indigenous aircraft such as Tejas and the purchase of new aircraft has become the need for airing.

Modernization and security measures of airports

The Ministry of Defence told the committee that 52 airfields have been equipped with state-of-the-art technologies under the "Modernization of Airfields Infrastructure" (MAFI) programme for modernization of airplanes.

Also, the work of creating new and safe aircraft shelters (strong infrastructure for green bases) on advance airports is also going on rapidly, to ensure the safety of critical assets from enemy attacks.

Tejas fighter plane symbolizes India’s self-sufficient campaign. This lightweight, multi-roll fighter aircraft is helping to meet the needs of the Indian Air Force as well as to further the country’s defence production capacity.

However, the opposition has tried to surround the government with delays in delivery by HAL. Experts believe that not only HAL has to work with coordination to implement the Tejas project faster but also Ministry of Defence and Indian Air Force.

Committee Recommendations
