Baramati Plane Crash Insurance Claim: The family of Pilot Captain Sumit Kamal Kapoor who died in Maharashtra’s Baramati has knocked the door of Delhi High Court against the insurance claim being dismissed by the insurance company. The family has challenged that decision of the New India Assurance Co. Ltd., which rejected the claim under the Los of License Insurance Policy of Rs 85.60 lakh. After the hearing of the case, Delhi High Court has sought the response to the concerned parties, including the insurance company.

On 28th January 2026, the aircraft crashed at the Baramati Airport in Maharashtra. A total of 5 people, including the then Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, were riders and all died.

Baramati Plane Crash Insurance Claim: Insurance disputes raised after the Baramati plane accident

The case after the death of Captain Sumit Kamal Kapoor his family had filed the claim under the insurance policy. The family says Captain Kapoor had taken the Los of License Insurance policy. Such a policy is specially created for pilots, so as to carry out economic protection in the event of loss or risk associated with the license.

According to the petition, Insurance The company rejected the claim of the family by releasing a letter on June 25. The family has filed a petition in High Court while challenging this decision.

Captain Sumit Kapoor’s family has said to the court that the insurance company should be directed to issue an insurance amount of Rs 85.60 lakh immediately.

The petition also sought that Sum Assured Interest should also be given under IRDAI (Protection of the interests of the policyholders) Regulations, 2017 on delay in payment of. The family says that not paid within the prescribed time frame, so they should also get interest as per the rules.

Demand for cancellation of the insurance claim dismissing letter

The petitioners have also sought to cancel the letter issued on June 25, 2026 through which the insurance claim was rejected. The claim that the family is allegedly rejected. On the same basis, the court has been requested to cancel the decision of the insurance company.

Demand for examining IRDAI

The petition also has been sought for the role of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). The family has requested the court that IRDAI should be instructed to examine the matter comprehensively. Also, a specialist committee or a special review committee should be constituted, which will check if the insurance claims are not arbitrarily dismissed.

The petition is said that if such complaints come out, they should have a fair investigation.

Notice issued by High Court

Delhi High Court has ordered all respondents to issue notice through all available means, including electronic and handcraft service after hearing on the petition.

The petitioners must complete the procedure of notice within a week as per the court order. The next hearing of the case will be on August 19, 2026.
