India-China Relations: Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will meet his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun next week, who will be the first high-level meeting between the two countries after the recent military return on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in East Ladakh. The meeting will be in Laos during the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Conference (ADMM-Plus).
Last month, the forces of India and China had shared patrols in Demochok and Desang areas of East Ladakh. This patrol took place at the time when both countries agreed to the weekly coordinated patrol to maintain peace after the retreat of the forces from these areas. The move is proved to be crucial in the direction of reducing the increasing tension after the collision in the Galvan Valley in 2020.
On October 21, India made an agreement with China, under which the forces of both the countries will be confined to the LAC. The agreement has been considered to be a great achievement for the end of the ongoing boundary dispute for four years, which was seen as a military kinetic after the 2020 Gallwan conflict.
ADMM-Plus is an annual meeting with eight countries of defence ministers including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia and America. This year’s meeting is likely to discuss border disputes and regional sustainability between India and China.
Rajnath Singh had met the Chinese Defence Minister Lee Shangfu during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting in India in April 2023. This meeting also had a broad discussion on the border issue. During the SCO meeting in Moscow earlier in 2020, Rajnath Singh met the Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Finghe, a few months after the Galvan conflict.
