S-400 air defence system: India may have to wait for the last two units of the state-of-the-art S-400 air defense system from Russia. The delivery of this review system was expected to be up to 2025, but it is now likely that these units will meet at the beginning of 2026.
The five S-400 units were dealt with costing $ 5.43 billion in 2018 between India and Russia. This air defense system is one of the world’s most advanced air defense system, capable of tracking and destroying many air hazards up to a distance of up to 400 kilometres.
S-400 system deployment and challenges
The first S-400 unit in India was reached in December 2021, which was immediately deployed in the Western sector. Next, the second and third units were also deployed in the next two years, thereby strengthening the defence system on the western and eastern border of India. Following the deployment of these units, India’s defence system has been strengthened against air hazards from Pakistan and China.
However, many challenges also faced in the way of complete deployment. The supply chain hampered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, delayed early delivery. In addition, the Ukraine crisis also influenced Russia’s defense industry, affecting the ability to meet the defense contracts.
Indian Air Force in Delay Stress!
The delay of these last two S-400 units has extended concerns in the Indian Air Force (IAF). The IAF and the Ministry of Defence has started looking for alternative solutions taking into account this delay, with additional air defense systems being considered. This will enable high preparations to be maintained at the borders, especially when tension is made since 2020 in relations with China.
The three units of the S-400 system currently deployed have already strengthened India’s air security capabilities. The ability to monitor and withstand threats in high-risk areas has increased. However, the deployment of the whole system is strategically extremely important, especially considering the change in regional security and the military progress of China.
India Needs Complete Set of S-400
The ongoing tension on the real control line (LAC) between India-China has made it more important to maintain a strong air defense network. S-400’s delay is a challenge for India to strengthen its resistance potential.
S-400 system must be set up for India between China’s advanced missile system and investment in fifth generation fighter jets to maintain a significant edge in India’s defence.
The procurement of the S-400 system was part of the effort of modernizing India’s defence forces in 2018 and reducing their weaknesses. But the potential expansion in the delivery of this system by 2026 has brought India’s defence strategy to a delicate turn.
